Well contamination is increasing across the US
Across the United States, more drinking water wells in agricultural areas are being contaminated with nutrients leaving farms and other agricultural operations. One of these common nutrients is nitrate or NO3. Nitrate is a primary drinking water standard. The maximum nitrate (MCL) allowed in drinking water is 10 mg/L of nitrate as nitrogen or NO3-N.
What are your options when your farm or community well tests high for nitrate? If your well has more than 2 connections, you will need to report your nitrate levels. When NO3 concentration exceeds 10 mg/L the county health department or regional water board (CA only) will require you to either turn off your well for drinking purposes or drill a new well. But often drilling a new well requires a much deeper hole to reach the next lower aquifer. Supplying all your drinking water needs with bottled water can be a real burden. At $0.25 per liter for a single serve water, you are paying roughly 1000X the price of the water from your well.
Drilling a new well can cost you and your farm up to $250,000 and there is no guarantee that the water will not be contaminated already with nitrate. Are there other solutions?
Use a Tailwater Nitrate Removal System at the well head
A much more sustainable solution is to install one of our nitrate removal systems at the well head or before the distribution line that carries well water for drinking, food preparation, or washing and bathing. Our system will remove the nitrate and you can then use an off-the-shelf Reverse Osmosis (RO) system or Ion Exchange system to purify the water. Our nitrate removal costs are extremely low (about $.005 per gallon).
Our biological treatment system will remove the nitrate using bacteria. The bacteria will take in the nitrate and convert it to nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas. This means there is no additional wastestream. It is also very low power and uses no hazardous chemicals.
